Ghost of Thornton Hall Review

If you want to see the trailer, click here. This is just a little bit out of order, but I thought it would be cool to review the newest Nancy Drew game.  I don’t reveal the culprit of this game, but I do talk about the next one.  If you haven’t played Ghost of Thornton Hall, wait to read the last part of the review. Her Interactive has said this is the “scariest” Nancy Drew game they have ever made.  I think that Shadow at the Water’s Edge is scarier, but that’s just me.

This game is rated E for Everyone, despite the scariness, and is made for Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, and Mac Computers.  Nancy Drew is called in to Black Rock Island by Savannah Woodham to find Jessalyn Thornon, a girl who was supposed to be getting married.  The rumor is that she was taken by Charlotte, the resident ghost who used to be Charlotte Thornton.  This game takes place in Georgia.  Did Charlotte really take Jessalyn?  Is this pre-wedding jitters?

The Characters:

Clara Thornton:  Jessalyn’s mom.  She runs the family business, and grew up in Thornton Hall.  She can come across as emotionally cold at times, according to some people.

Wade Thornton:  He believes in the supernatural and has a history with Savannah.  He also has a shady past, making him questionable to Clara.

Harper Thornton:  Resident crazy.  She’s the black sheep of the family.  She has been kept secret from outsiders, and hides so the family doesn’t find her while they’re searching for Jessalyn.  She thinks Charlotte, her sister, was murdered.  Is she just nuts?

Colton Birchfield:  Jessalyn’s fiancé.  He seems to be very upset that Jessalyn is gone, but there also seems to be some underlying stuff going on behind the scenes.  What’s his story?

Savannah Woodham:  Ghost hunter.  She called Nancy in to find out what happened to Jessalyn.  She won’t go near Thornton Hall because it’s not safe for anyone who “believes.”  She thinks Nancy is the right one for the job because she’s a skeptic.

Addison Hammond:  Jessalyn’s best friend.  She spent the night with Jessalyn, and has trouble talking about what happened.  She seems really scared. Bess and Ned:  Phone friends.  Voice of reason for a weird, spooky mystery.

Charlotte Thornton:  Resident ghost.  She died on the night of her 21st birthday in a fire.  Has her ghost come back for revenge?  Did she take Jessalyn?  Will she hurt Nancy?

The lighting can be dark sometimes in this game, making it hard to navigate. key_screenshots (1)

Spooky spooky spooky!  This game didn’t scare me as much as Shadow at the Water’s Edge, and Charlotte’s ghost was more beautiful than scary.  Still, there were some moments where it got your heart pounding.  Plus, you never knew when you would see something just…weird.  It would be like, “Did I really just see that?”  That kept you wondering what would happen around every corner.

The plot seemed to twist and turn unexpectedly, especially close to the end.  I admit, I was not expecting the big plot twist in the middle.  That completely shocked me.

“Calling” Charlotte’s ghost.  I was pretty afraid to do it the first time, but then it made me laugh.  Can’t say anything else here.

Great music.  It was really atmospheric and spooky.  That really set the tone of the game.

You get to learn a lot about the Thornton family history…not all of it is good.  Some of it is quite depressing.

Some Interesting Points:

Her Interactive threw in some new things to this game.  There’s a fast-forward button where you can actually fast forward in a conversation…very useful for repeat plays.

Again, you never knew what was going to happen around the corner.  Did that statue just move???

There’s a lot of hidden passages in this game that you have to unlock.  At some point, they become almost too much to remember.  You don’t know how to get back somewhere.

Lots of areas are constantly unlocking in the game, some you don’t even know about.

You get to hear some ghost recordings with Wade.  Fun! screenshots (1)

Gameplay Moments:

The encounters with Charlotte’s ghost seem creepy and cool at the same time, particularly when she looks like she’s reaching for you.  Yikes and wow!

Once you play the game a few times, you start to realize you’re being “called” by a certain someone…it makes you realize that not all is as it seems.  There’s stuff going on that Nancy doesn’t know about.

Overall Impression:

This game was quite dark and sad, but it was also fun to explore around the house and see the ghost.  I don’t think the game is the scariest Nancy Drew game, but there are definitely spooky moments.  This isn’t my favorite Nancy Drew game, but I still enjoyed it.  I plan on playing it many times.

Next Game:

If you haven’t played Ghost of Thornton Hall, don’t look!

Spoiler alert!
